Project: Foam cut of the World’s Largest Surfboard

Scope of work

Machined in two surfaces to accommodate shipping, this complex shape came to life at Symmetrix Composite Tooling. The design was inspired by Australian surfboard shaper Nev Hyman. Westerly Marine build the board using boat building techniques, and the finishing touches were applied by local Huntington Beach surf aficionados.

The 42′ long surfboard, with 66 people on board, rode a wave for 12 seconds, breaking two Guinness World Records in the process: for most people riding a surfboard at once, and for the world’s largest surfboard.

  • Plug surface finish advanced to 400/600 grit and buffed to high gloss finish
  • FRP Production tooling with a gel-coat finish, Vinyl ester ‘low shrink’ resin system, CSM, print blocker and core

Scope of work

  • CNC machined plugs for 360° bustle caps

Hatteras Yachts is a leading boat builder out of New Bern, NC, known for their innovative fishing boats. Symmetrix was asked to build patterns for portions of a new build.  Using our standard methods and materials, our engineers and shop craftsmen developed a plan using our accurate CNC machining center to create seamless 360° small parts.

Scope of work

  • CNC machined direct to mold hull surface measuring at 185 m² or 2000 ft²
  • Hydraulically actuated surface / See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1v7tSn-wr8
  • Split on centerline to accommodate the classic tumblehome hull shape
  • Optimized to support closed molding vacuum infusion hull laminating process
  • Engineered solutions to anticipate extreme exotherm during infusion: This surface had heat shielding material incorporated into the composite tooling laminate as well as thermocouple wiring for real time measurement and management throughout cure
  • Supplied an FRP single skin transom mold that was removable and a traditional deck pattern as well

Symmetrix gave us confidence to do something that had never been done before, something so large scale. From conceptualizing, researching and problem solving, to follow through with manufacturing and product – their project management started early on and continued through the whole project. Client: The New Cubed builders and Hodgdon Yachts

Designer: VPLP Design

Scope of work

  • Project deadline of 10 weeks
  • CNC machined patterns and plugs for the hull, the structural frames in the bow area and the offshore dodger
  • Hull exceeded 280 m² or 3000 ft²
  • Machined in seven sections to accommodate trucking to the Hodgdon Yachts shipyard in East Boothbay, Maine
  • Achieved demanding tolerances that were well supported by our rigid backup structure and composite materials
