Project: Foam cut of the World’s Largest Surfboard

Scope of work

Machined in two surfaces to accommodate shipping, this complex shape came to life at Symmetrix Composite Tooling. The design was inspired by Australian surfboard shaper Nev Hyman. Westerly Marine build the board using boat building techniques, and the finishing touches were applied by local Huntington Beach surf aficionados.

The 42′ long surfboard, with 66 people on board, rode a wave for 12 seconds, breaking two Guinness World Records in the process: for most people riding a surfboard at once, and for the world’s largest surfboard.

Scope of work

  • CNC machined plugs for 360° bustle caps

Hatteras Yachts is a leading boat builder out of New Bern, NC, known for their innovative fishing boats. Symmetrix was asked to build patterns for portions of a new build.  Using our standard methods and materials, our engineers and shop craftsmen developed a plan using our accurate CNC machining center to create seamless 360° small parts.

Project: CNC machined body panels

Scope of work

  • CNC machine all racing car body panels
  • Contact laminate tooling
  • +/-1mm on panel intersections

Located in Wareham, MA, Factory Five produces novelty car kits. Each kit has a unique theme/style and a particular engine/drive train configuration. In the case of Project 818, the car is designed to weigh 818 kgs with a mid-engine location. Rather than a one-piece body, the car is configured as a set of smaller panels, requiring tight-tolerance, one-piece molds. Symmetrix utilized the fully digitized shape of the car to deliver extremely accurate, CNC machined surfaces. The result: tight fitting panels, free from mold parting lines commonly seen on other fiberglass bodies, needing little-to-no paint prep work to get customers out of the garage and onto the road.

“Grassroots Motorsports” awarded the 818 an Editors’ Choice award for 2013. This car’s power to weight ratio makes it a phenomenal contender with many super cars on the market.

Project: The Transition® wing plugs

 

Scope of work

  • CNC machined plugs for eight folding wing panels.

Terrafugia is a small, privately held American corporation that is developing a roadable aircraft called the Transition and a flying car called the TF-X. http://www.terrafugia.com/aircraft/transition

Symmetrix was tapped to shape the eight folding wing panel surfaces of the Transition prototype. Be on the lookout for project updates as we have some new Terrafugia surfaces in the production schedule.

Project: Grasshopper aero ramp and clamp ring fairing

Scope of work

  • CNC machined patterns for aero ramp and clamp ring fairings.

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company with its headquarters in Hawthorne, California. Launching satellites and commuting to the International Space Station are just some of the programs at SpaceX, with the more recent initiative to reuse the stage one rocket and fuel cell referred to as Grasshopper. During the fall back to earth, the stage one rocket will restart its motors and deploy landing legs for a vertical touchdown. Symmetrix was asked to CNC shape components of this assembly, known as the aero ramp and clamp ring fairings. Hall Composites then infused carbon tooling and started producing parts. Meeting the precision and quality standards for SpaceX was done through CAD file controls, material selection, and our expert CNC machining skills.
