Foam Cut

Client: Visit Huntington Beach

Project: Foam cut of the World’s Largest Surfboard

Scope of work

  • Foam cut

Machined in two surfaces to accommodate shipping, this complex shape came to life at Symmetrix Composite Tooling. The design was inspired by Australian surfboard shaper Nev Hyman. Westerly Marine build the board using boat building techniques, and the finishing touches were applied by local Huntington Beach surf aficionados.

The 42′ long surfboard, with 66 people on board, rode a wave for 12 seconds, breaking two Guinness World Records in the process: for most people riding a surfboard at once, and for the world’s largest surfboard.

Patterns & Plugs

Client: Factory Five

Project: CNC machined body panels

Scope of work

  • CNC machine all racing car body panels
  • Contact laminate tooling
  • +/-1mm on panel intersections

Located in Wareham, MA, Factory Five produces novelty car kits. Each kit has a unique theme/style and a particular engine/drive train configuration. In the case of Project 818, the car is designed to weigh 818 kgs with a mid-engine location. Rather than a one-piece body, the car is configured as a set of smaller panels, requiring tight-tolerance, one-piece molds. Symmetrix utilized the fully digitized shape of the car to deliver extremely accurate, CNC machined surfaces. The result: tight fitting panels, free from mold parting lines commonly seen on other fiberglass bodies, needing little-to-no paint prep work to get customers out of the garage and onto the road.

“Grassroots Motorsports” awarded the 818 an Editors’ Choice award for 2013. This car’s power to weight ratio makes it a phenomenal contender with many super cars on the market.

Pattern & Plugs

Client: TPI Composites and Proterra

Project: Machined surface area

Scope of work

  • Machined surface area 198 m² or 2130 ft²

TPI Composites and Symmetrix partnered to supply Proterra with a weight optimized, 40’ intercity commuter bus, built from composite materials and completely powered by electricity for zero emissions.

Symmetrix shaped the large format, complex surfaces called for in the design of the bus’ master pattern to tight tolerances, eliminating errors in its geometry for an error-free finished product. See the detail and complexity of the bus, especially in the upper surfaces that house and hide the recharging and cooling system here.

They do a really good job of keeping open communication – consistently providing updates and were very quick to contact us with any issues. We had a very positive experience and outcome. It was a pleasure doing business and would certainty do it again.
